The Power of Press Releases

Get the Word Out

Submitting press releases to relevant news sources is a great way to get the word out about your new or established VA practice.  I want to stress that you shouldn’t forget your local media outlets for your press release.  Call your local newspaper and ask for the name of the Business or Technology Editor and don’t forget to ask how they like to receive their press releases.  In the age of technology, many like to receive the release via email, but you always want to double check.

Become a Master Craftsman

When writing your release keep the following in mind:

1. Make sure the release is newsworthy and interesting.  Not everything is newsworthy and this is one of the main reasons why a release is not picked up for coverage.
2. Stick to the facts and be sure to include What? Why? When? Where? and How?
3. Avoid jargon and hype.
4. Be sure your release is timely.
5. Never write a press release in ALL CAPS.
6. Use correct grammar.
7. Make sure your release is at least 300 words.

Don’t be afraid to follow up because there are times that your release can be placed into the “circular file”.  Many are afraid to follow up, but follow up is key to getting the press coverage you desire.  Pick up the telephone and call the editor or reporter (don’t email).  Ask the editor if they have a few minutes and if they don’t ask for a more convenient time to call them back.  If they have the time, be quick and be brief.  Let them know who you are and why you are calling.  Ask if they a) received your press release and b) if they have any questions.  If the editor seems interested, feel free to ask a few leading questions.

Press releases are not a one time deal.  They key to getting press is developing a strategic press campaign.
